Parkinsons Disease Care

Parkinson’s Disease Program

Young man helps a senior man out of a wheelchair

More than 1 million people in the United States are living with Parkinson’s Disease, and an additional 60,000 people are diagnosed with it each year. Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative disorder that tends to affect more senior adults, but it can strike younger people as well.  It is often a very unpredictable condition robbing people of their balance, coordination and mobility.

At Blue Water Homecare, we have a specialty team of experienced in-home caregivers trained in Parkinson’s Disease management to help you and your family.

We recognize the importance of well-educated providers who focus on client safety, nutrition, wellness, and on-time medication reminders.  We are able to tailor care plans based on each individual’s needs, which can frequently and rapidly change as the disease progresses.

Our Blue Water Homecare founder and registered nurse, Jennifer Prescott, is actively involved in the Parkinson’s community in the Austin and Hill Country areas and tirelessly offers her support and leadership to the Capital Area Parkinson’s Society of Austin (CAPS).

Living With Parkinson’s

The rate at which symptoms of Parkinson’s progress is unpredictable. From the moment of an initial diagnosis, you may have very mild symptoms, or they may come on swiftly and severely.

Some common symptoms of Parkinson’s include:

  • Tremors or uncontrollable shaking throughout the body
  • Limb rigidity
  • Loss of muscle control
  • Gait and balance issues
  • Decreased mobility
  • Depression
  • Constipation
  • Sleep disorders

While your loved one is faced with the physical toll that Parkinson’s takes on his or her body, it is typically those closest to the person who are challenged with the equally difficult emotional toll that the disease elicits.

Managing the disease on your own in its early stages at home is one thing, but as it progresses, you may discover that your family needs more assistance via an in-home care agency.
