Medicare GUIDE Program FAQ

What is the GUIDE Program?

The GUIDE Program (Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience) is a Medicare model built to support people living with dementia and the family members caring for them. It’s a Medicare GUIDE model dementia care benefit, meaning it comes through Medicare directly, not through a separate insurance plan, and it pairs each family with a care navigator, caregiver training, and respite care support.

Is there a cost for GUIDE services?

No. GUIDE is a free dementia care Medicare program for anyone who qualifies. There’s no copay, no deductible, and no bill from Blue Water Homecare for GUIDE-covered services. Medicare covers the full cost.

Who qualifies for the GUIDE Program?

You’ll want to check the GUIDE program eligibility requirements with your care team, but in general, you may qualify if you have Original Medicare Parts A and B (not Medicare Advantage), a dementia or Alzheimer’s diagnosis confirmed by a clinician, and you live at home rather than in a nursing home or memory care unit. If you’re wondering how to qualify for the Medicare GUIDE program, the easiest first step is a quick call with our team, we can help you figure out where you stand.

What is respite care, and how much do I get through GUIDE?

Respite care gives family caregivers a real break, someone else steps in to provide care so you can rest, run errands, or just breathe for a bit. Under the Medicare respite care $2,500 benefit, eligible families can receive up to that amount each year toward in-home respite or adult day services, at no out-of-pocket cost.

Does Blue Water Homecare serve my area?

We proudly provide GUIDE program home care Texas services across Travis, Williamson, Hays, Burnet, and Lampasas counties, along with Killeen, Marble Falls, Kingsland, and the greater Texas Hill Country region. If you don’t see your town listed, give us a call, our service area is growing.

What’s the difference between GUIDE and Medicare Advantage?

GUIDE is only available to people with Original Medicare Parts A and B. If your loved one has a Medicare Advantage plan (sometimes called Part C), they won’t qualify for GUIDE unless they switch back to Original Medicare during an eligible enrollment period. It’s worth checking which type of Medicare your family member has before assuming either way.

Can GUIDE benefits be used alongside VA benefits?

Yes. GUIDE can be used alongside earned VA benefits, so veterans and their families don’t have to choose between the two. If your loved one is eligible for both, we can help you understand how they work together.

What does a care navigator actually do?

Every family enrolled in GUIDE is paired with a dedicated care navigator who acts as a single point of contact for questions, coordinates between doctors and services, connects you to community resources like transportation or meal support, and is available around the clock for urgent concerns. Think of them as the person keeping all the moving pieces of dementia care organized so you don’t have to.

Does my loved one have to live in a facility to qualify?

No, actually the opposite. GUIDE is built around in-home dementia care, so your loved one needs to be living at home, in independent living, or in an approved residential care community, not in a nursing home or memory care unit, to qualify for the program.

How do I get started with Blue Water Homecare and the GUIDE Program?

Just give us a call or fill out the contact form on this page. As a dementia care navigator resource for families across Leander, Cedar Park, Round Rock, and the surrounding Hill Country, we’ll walk you through whether your family qualifies, answer any questions, and help you get connected, no obligation, just answers.
